Renowned Professor Advocates for Structural Reform in Nigerian Politics
During a recent appearance on Arise TV, Professor Pat Utomi, a renowned expert in political economy, criticized Nigeria’s political landscape, stating that the country lacks genuine political parties, which hinders its democratic progress.
Utomi highlighted the prevalent focus on elections as a means to gain power rather than the establishment of robust political institutions.
He emphasized the need to prioritize building a functional democracy before the next election cycle, emphasizing that the growth of a nation is rooted in the establishment of viable political parties.
In his assessment, Utomi expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of Nigerian politics, characterizing it as a platform for “machine politics,” where the primary objective is to seize power and distribute benefits, rather than being driven by ideological and policy-driven governance.
In response to these challenges, Utomi disclosed his discussions with prominent figures in Nigerian politics, such as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Engr Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Mr. Peter Obi, regarding the potential merger of political forces to create a stronger political entity.
He stressed the importance of building a party that transcends individual ambitions and aligns with the values and ideologies necessary for nation-building.
Utomi concluded by emphasizing the need for Nigeria to shift its focus towards policies and principles that can contribute to the nation’s development.
He called for a collective effort to build a more cohesive political system that reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people, rather than being driven by individual interests.
