A communal clash in Jigawa State on Friday has claimed nine lives, with four others injured, according to the state police command.
The incident occurred in Miga Local Government Area and has left several others hospitalized. Police spokesperson, SP Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the clashes in a statement, explaining that the violence stemmed from a confrontation between communities in Miga and Jahun Local Government Areas.
According to Adam, the conflict began on January 3, 2025, when a group of suspected miscreants, believed to be Fulani, allegedly broke into a shop in Gululu village, Miga LGA, and stole hibiscus and other provisions.
“A team of villagers, Hausawa, traced their footprints to a Fulani settlement in Yankunama village, Jahun LGA,” he said.
Upon arrival, the Fulani reportedly attacked the villagers using bows and arrows, critically injuring four individuals. In retaliation, the villagers mobilized, launched attacks on the Fulani community, and set their houses ablaze across various locations within Miga and Jahun LGAs.
The police responded swiftly, dispatching officers from the Miga and Jahun Divisions to restore peace. Despite their intervention, nine bodies were recovered from the scene and transported to hospitals in Jahun and Miga, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.
A source in Gululu village disclosed that a stakeholders’ meeting was convened immediately after the incident.
The meeting was attended by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, chairmen of the two LGAs, district heads, Miyetti Allah leadership, and vigilance groups.
Discussions during the meeting centered on strategies to maintain law and order, prevent violence and propaganda, and avoid reprisal attacks.
SP Shi’isu Adam stated that the situation has since been brought under control, and an investigation is underway to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the violence.
