An Agreement Between the Federal Government and Labor Unions
For the next six months, all federal government employees who are paid out of the federal treasury would receive a provisional wage increase of only N25,000.
To mitigate the impact on public transportation caused by the elimination of the PMS subsidy, the federal government has pledged to expedite the delivery of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.
Micro and small businesses (iii) will receive funding from the federal government.
For the next 6 months, the value-added tax on diesel fuel will be eliminated.
v) Starting in October 2023, the federal government would start sending N75,000 checks to 15 million households, or N25,000 per month for three months.
RESOLUTIONS:
The following decisions were made as a result of the meeting discussions:
Workers must be present at their jobs in order to solve the problems that are at the heart of the dispute.
Unions representing workers in Nigeria advocated for a higher wage award, and a delegation from the federal government said they will take the issue up with President Bola Tinubu.
iii) Forming a subcommittee to iron out the implementation details of all potential government actions to soften the blow of removing gasoline subsidies.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, who was unable to attend in person but promised to do so through video call, said that the dispute between the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State must be resolved as soon as possible.
v) The National Labor Committee and the Trades Union Congress will review the Federal Government’s proposals with an eye toward calling off the strike until further talks about how to put the aforementioned resolutions into action.
The meeting was chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and included virtual participation from Governor Abdulrazak Abdulrahman of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), and Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, Information Minister Mohammed Idris, Labor and Employment Minister Simon Lalong, Minister of State for Labor Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Budget and Economic Planning Minister Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Minister Betta Edu, and Industry, Trade, and Investment Minister Doris Uz were also present.
Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC), was joined by Tommy Etim Okon, vice president of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Emma Ugboaja, general secretary of the NLC, and Nuhu Toro, general secretary of the TUC.
