In preparation for the statewide strike that will take place on Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have called for an extraordinary meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC).
During the meeting, the organized labor will review the modalities of the planned strike in response to the attack on the National President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero.
Additionally, during the meeting, the organized labor will review the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Federal Government and the Organized Labour on October 2, 2023, in response to the removal of the fuel subsidy.
On Tuesday, the summons was made public by Tommy Etim, who serves as the National Vice President of the TUC.
Ajaero’s detention has prompted organized labor to call for a protest in Owerri, which is located in the state of Imo. On Friday of the previous week, the labor union issued an ultimatum with a deadline of five days.
The labor centers urged that the commissioner of police in the state be moved to a different position, as well as the arrest and prosecution of the adviser to the governor who is suspected of carrying out the attack.
If their demands were not met within the next five days, the unions threatened to launch a walkout that would affect workers across the country.
Ajaero was taken into custody by the police on Wednesday, before the protest that was going to take place across the state of Imo.
