The House of Representatives on Thursday insisted that forensic audit report of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on the alleged missing of $20 billion must be made available to Nigerians.
An international firm, PriceWaterHouseCoopers was engaged by the federal government in April last year to carry out an audit of the NNPC’s account, following controversy surrounding the actual amount alleged to be unremitted to the federation account by the corporation.
The report of the audit was finally submitted to President Goodluck Jonathan over two weeks ago, with a promise that the recommendations would be acted upon.
But minority leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila in a motion yesterday, reminded the House that while the report was formally presented to the president by the firm on February 2, 2015, “Up till now, neither the general public nor the National Assembly has been briefed in details with regard to the contents of the audit report”.
Hon. Gbajabiamila said for the purpose of accountability and in compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, “the federal government should, as a matter of urgency and in the interest of the general public, make the full report available to the House immediately”.
When the question was put to a vote by the Speaker, Aminu Waiziri Tambuwal, the House unanimously voted in support of the motion.
