The North Central Youth Lobbying Committee on increase in youth participation in politics has demanded 60 percent leadership positions in elective posts in the All Progressives Congress, APC, ward congresses in the country.
A member of the committee and Niger State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Emmanuel Umar, who stated this when he led members on a visit to the State Chairman of APC in Minna, said the request cuts across other subsequent elections.
He insisted that the youth over time have been relegated to the background, hence the need to give them the opportunity to contest and participate in leadership.
“The young people should be given the opportunity to contest for offices, including those of youth offices, as well as the Chairmanship and Governorship positions in the state,” he explained.
While commending the state Governor, Alh Abubakar Sani Bello for creating an enabling environment for youths to be actively involved in his government, Umar said, “about sixty percent of appointments in his cabinet are agile youths.”
According to him, appointing them into his cabinet had given them ample opportunity to contribute positively to the growth and development of the State.
Umar also applauded Caretaker Committee Chairman of APC, Mai Mala Buni for supporting youths’ participation in politics of the State.
Speaking also, Niger State Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Comrade Bello Barau Sheriff described the move as a welcomed development, which he said should be supported by all meaning Nigerians.
He said, “we will mobilize credible youths to partake actively in politics and we will caution them against using the social media to make negative comments.”
In his response, the state Chairman of APC, Alh Saudi Aliyu Kalgoko represented by the Secretary of the party, Abdullahi Aliyu told members of the Committee that the party was in full support of such move.
He assured,” your message will be conveyed to the Niger State Governor, Alh Abubakar Sani Bello.”
