The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has revealed that Northern Nigeria is benefiting from 52% of the ongoing road construction projects across the country. He made this known while addressing concerns about regional infrastructure development, emphasizing that the federal government is committed to ensuring balanced road projects nationwide.
According to Umahi, the large share of projects in the North is part of the government’s strategy to enhance connectivity, boost economic activities, and improve the overall quality of life for residents. He noted that several major highways, bridges, and rural road networks are currently under construction, with significant progress recorded despite budgetary and logistical challenges.
The minister attributed the focus on Northern roads to the region’s vast landmass, which requires extensive road networks to link communities, facilitate trade, and support agricultural productivity. He also highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation of key expressways, including those linking major cities and economic hubs, to ensure smoother transportation for goods and people.

While addressing concerns about the pace of road development in other regions, Umahi assured that the government is committed to equitable distribution of infrastructure projects. He stated that road construction in the South, East, and West remains a priority, with several projects already in various stages of completion.
Stakeholders have welcomed the increased investment in road infrastructure, noting that improved roads will drive economic growth, reduce travel time, and enhance security in affected areas. However, some have called for greater transparency in project allocation and execution to ensure that all regions receive their fair share of development.
As construction continues, the federal government has urged state governments and private sector partners to collaborate in sustaining infrastructure projects that will benefit Nigerians across all regions.
