The National Patriotic Coalition (NPC) has criticized the recently concluded local government elections in Kano State, describing them as a “sham” and an attack on democratic values.
InfoStride News reports that despite a Federal High Court ruling disqualifying the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidates, Governor Abba Yusuf allegedly proceeded with the election in defiance of the court’s decision.
In a statement signed by NPC spokesperson Kunle Solomon, the coalition denounced the election results—where the NNPP reportedly won all 44 chairmanship positions and 484 councillorship seats—as illegitimate.
Solomon described the election as “a comedy taken too far” and labeled it a “kangaroo process” that allegedly involved the participation of underage children.
“The National Patriotic Coalition (NPC) strongly condemns the recent local government elections in Kano State as a sham and a blatant disregard for democracy,” the statement read.
According to the NPC, Governor Yusuf’s decision to proceed with the polls despite the court ruling reflects contempt for the rule of law.
“This action by the Governor violates Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates that the judgments of the Supreme Court and other federal courts be respected by all authorities and individuals across the federation,” the statement emphasized.
The NPC further alleged that either election materials were not properly provided by the state electoral commission or, where they were, underage children were used to manipulate the outcome through thumbprinting and premature result declarations.
“This travesty is unacceptable and undermines the integrity of the democratic process,” the coalition remarked.
“The people of Kano deserve elections that truly reflect their will, not a manipulated process that harms Nigeria’s international reputation.”
The NPC called for an investigation into the alleged irregularities and urged authorities to take corrective measures.
“Governor Yusuf’s actions represent a direct assault on democratic principles and a dangerous disregard for judicial authority,” the statement added.
The NPC pledged its solidarity with the people of Kano, insisting that only free and fair elections can safeguard democracy.
“We call on Governor Yusuf to respect the Constitution, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that future elections are conducted in a transparent and credible manner,” Solomon concluded.
