The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and APM Terminals have officially commenced freight services between Lagos and Ibadan, marking a significant boost for cargo transportation in the country. The new rail service is expected to ease congestion at the Apapa port and improve the movement of goods between the two major cities.
The initiative aims to provide businesses with a faster and more efficient alternative to road transport, which has long been plagued by gridlock and delays. With the Lagos-Ibadan rail corridor now operational for freight, importers and exporters can move cargo more seamlessly, reducing both transit time and logistics costs.
APM Terminals, one of the leading port operators in Nigeria, has been working alongside the NRC to facilitate smooth cargo operations. The service will allow freight trains to transport goods directly from the Apapa port to designated terminals in Ibadan, helping to decongest the Lagos port and enhance overall supply chain efficiency.

Stakeholders in the logistics and trade sectors have welcomed the development, citing the benefits of reduced road traffic, lower transportation costs, and improved turnaround time for goods. Analysts believe that expanding freight rail services could help drive economic growth and attract more investment into Nigeria’s transport infrastructure.
As the service gets underway, expectations are high for increased capacity and further expansion of rail freight networks to other parts of the country. The success of the Lagos-Ibadan freight corridor could pave the way for additional rail logistics solutions, reinforcing Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its transport sector.
