The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a significant aviation incident involving a Boeing 733 registered as 5N-BYQ and operated by Aero Contractors Airlines. The incident occurred upon the aircraft’s arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja, following its journey from Lagos at approximately 10:47 a.m. yesterday.
James Odaudu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NSIB, officially communicated this development through a statement. According to Odaudu, the aircraft, while attempting to vacate the runway via A4, encountered an issue where its nose wheel became lodged in the grass verge, resulting in its fuselage remaining positioned on the runway.
In response to the incident, Mr. Odaudu highlighted the importance of collecting crucial information for a thorough investigation. He called upon the public to contribute any available pictures, videos, or recording evidence related to the event.

“The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has been notified and has commenced an investigation into a serious incident involving a Boeing 733 with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-BYQ belonging to Aero Contractors Airlines, which occurred around 10:47 am (Local Time) on 12th November 2023,” stated Odaudu.
He continued, “The aircraft, upon landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja from Lagos and in a bid to exit the runway via A4, had its nose wheel stuck in the grass verge with its fuselage on the runway. Consequently, the runway was closed pending the towing of the aircraft from the runway. There was no injury or fatality.”
Odaudu emphasized the NSIB’s appeal for information from the general public in the form of pictures, videos, or recording evidence to aid in conducting a comprehensive investigation. The NSIB provided contact information for submitting relevant materials, including their official email address (info@aib.gov.ng) and social media platforms (NSIB_Nigeria). Additionally, an emergency line was provided at +234-807-709-0909.
He also urged the public and the press to respect the privacy of the individuals on board and refrain from assuming the cause of the serious incident until the formal report is released. Odaudu reiterated that the NSIB, as a multimodal investigation agency, is mandated to investigate transportation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria, identifying probable causes and offering safety recommendations to prevent reoccurrence.
This incident underscores the critical role played by aviation safety authorities in ensuring the thorough investigation of incidents and accidents to enhance overall safety in the aviation industry. As the NSIB undertakes this investigation, collaboration with the public is crucial in gathering diverse perspectives and evidence that can contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the events leading to the incident. The transparency and engagement encouraged by the NSIB are integral to building trust and confidence in the investigative process, ultimately promoting safety measures that prevent future occurrences.
