Notable personalities from Esan have called on Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state to re-instate the dethroned monarch, Onojie of Uromi, Anselm Aidenojie II.
The Onojie was dethroned by former Governor Adams Oshiomhole for reportedly supporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Vanguard, the Senator representing Edo Central senatorial district, Clifford Odia, while speaking on the issue, said “The purported removal of His Highness is very callous and was taken in bad faith. That is why we have come to appeal to Uromi people to be calm until the matter is resolved. What the former governor has done is completely at variance to the norms. That is why we have come out in clear terms to condemn the action, as it is politically motivated.”
Also, the Senator representing Esan North-East, and South East federal constituency, Sergius Ogun added that “In many parts of Nigeria, traditional rulers are chosen from ruling houses and crowned with such rulers deriving their legitimacy and powers from the traditional council or king makers. This is clearly not the case in this instance since the Ojuromi derives his legitimacy and powers from God; as our people say the Onojie of Uromi is born and not made.”
The Adams Oshiomhole administration alleged that the monarch was removed because he harassed a woman during the governorship election, which was held on September 28, 2016.
