The Ogun State Government has commended the Federal Government for approving the adoption of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) as a federal institution.
The approval, granted on Friday, followed an invitation from the Ogun State Government, recognizing TASUED’s pivotal role in teacher education.
President Bola Tinubu, in his remarks, highlighted that the decision honors the contributions of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin to Nigeria’s educational development.

He also acknowledged the intervention of the Awujale of Ijebuland, whose efforts helped prevent the university’s closure in 2012.
Reacting to the development, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, through a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, expressed optimism that the transition would bring positive transformation to the specialized institution.
Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to educational advancement, emphasizing that TASUED will continue to serve as a center of excellence in teacher education.
The transition is expected to attract increased funding, enhance infrastructure development, and boost TASUED’s national recognition, further solidifying Ogun State’s status as a hub for academic excellence in Nigeria.
With this upgrade, TASUED joins Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education and Adeyemi Federal University of Education as one of only three universities of education in the country.
The decision aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision of strengthening teacher training and improving educational standards nationwide.
It also reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s human capital development through quality education and advanced teacher training programs.
The adoption of TASUED increases the number of new federal universities of education established in recent years to seven. The institutions include:
- Federal University of Education, Kano, Kano State
- Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State
- Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo, Ondo State
- Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, Imo State
- Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State
- Federal University of Education, Kontagora, Niger State
The development is seen as a strategic step toward addressing the country’s teacher education needs and improving the overall quality of learning across Nigeria.
