The Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, has linked the increasing cases of missing girls and ritual killings in the state to the growing prevalence of “hookups.”
“Hookup” is a slang term describing brief, casual, and often transactional sexual encounters.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Odutola identified the hookup culture as a major factor contributing to the alarming trend, particularly among young girls.
“Today, we have lots of reports of missing persons. By the time we start an investigation, not less than 10 young girls and ladies go missing daily,” she said.
The police spokesperson further explained that investigations reveal a disturbing link between missing persons cases and hookup platforms.
“Most of them are connected to hookup channels and apps.
They fall victim to strangers who casually invite them to unknown places, and eventually, they are used for ritual purposes,” Odutola stated.
Ogun State has witnessed several troubling cases involving missing and murdered girls in recent months.
In October, the police reported the disappearance of 18-year-old Testimony John, who vanished after being sent on an errand to Saabo Market in Sagamu.
Similarly, in September, police launched a manhunt for the killers of 17-year-old secondary school student Habibat Akinsanya, who was abducted and murdered in the state.
Odutola highlighted the urgency of addressing the hookup culture and called for increased public awareness to protect young women from falling victim to such crimes.
