The Rector, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Prof. Oludele Itiola says the institution is being repositioned to be a reference point in technological, scientific and entrepreneurial education.
Prof. Itiola who made this known while defending the institution’s 2014 budget estimates before members of the Ogun State House of Assembly said the polytechnic would also strengthen its programmes to ensure continued production of skilled manpower for self-reliance.
Consequently, he said the institution intends to expend a sum of N2.613b for the next fiscal year, saying N1.58b out of this amount was earmarked for recurrent expenditure including payment of salaries of staffs and overhead cost, while N1.03b was earmarked for capital projects. He added that the sum of N2.613b was expected to be generated as revenue.
Giving a further breakdown of expenditure for capital projects, Prof. Itiola indicated that N86.2m was set aside for accreditation of courses by the National Board for Technical Education {NBTE] and training of personnel.
Also defending the ICT Polytechnic Igbesa’s budget estimates, the Deputy Rector, Mr Sola Adetutu disclosed that the institution would continue to promote human capital development to meet technological and industrial needs of the Nigerian society.
He said to achieve this, the institution was budgeting the sum of N768m as total expenditure for 2014, explaining that over N468 million would be spent on recurrent matters, while N300m had been set aside for capital project and N1.432b expected to be generated as revenue.
The acting Rector also said N25m each would be spent on the rehabilitation of institution’s health centre and construction of office buildings to enable it address administrative challenges.
In his own presentation, the Head of Bureau of Tertiary Institutions, Mr. Wasiu Kuye disclosed that the agency’s budget for the next fiscal year was N50m, out of which N30m was devoted to recurrent expenditure, while the N20m balance was earmarked for the execution of capital projects for the year.
In the same vein, the Authorities of Tai Solarin College, Omu-Ijebu have proposed a total sum of N1.018b as total expenditure for the 2014 fiscal year even as it expected to generate N142m within the same period.
The College Provost, Dr Abiodun Ojo who made this known while defending the budget estimates revealed that N718m would cater for both personnel and overhead costs, while the balance of N300 million was budgeted for capital projects.
Dr. Ojo said that the institution intended to spend N60m for the construction of a 1000-seater auditorium English language laboratory, technical workshop, students centre as well as accreditation exercise.
He further revealed that N30m had been budgeted for the construction of an ICT Centre, while N53m was set aside for the construction of a mini sports complex needed by Physical and Health Education students.
In his defence, the Provost, College of Health Technology, Ilese-Ijebu, Dr Tunji Dawodu said that N577m was the total expenditure proposed for 2014, out of which N277m would go for payment of salaries and overhead costs, while the sum of N300m was earmarked for the execution of capital projects.
The Rector, Gateway Industrial and Petro-Gas Institute, Engineer Hamilton Olabode said the mission of the institution was to establish programmes that would meet the needs of the State and the nation, disclosing that N277m was total expenditure for 2014.
The Rector, who got the commendation of the lawmakers for his efforts in turning around the institution, said that N117m was set aside for current expenditure, while the balance of the N160million was meant for capital projects.
