Cranes of Uganda goalkeeper Dennis Onyango is excited to be back in Nigeria and hopes his team can win Wednesday’s international friendly with Nigeria.
.
Onyango was part of the Uganda team that lost 1-0 to Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta in March 2007 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.
.
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper says they are in Nigeria to gain experience and also avenge the loss in 2007.
.
“I was part of the team that lost in Nigeria in 2007. We played quite well in that match and I think we should have gotten something out of it,”he said.
.
“Nigeria is a very good side despite the fact they didn’t qualify for the 2015 Afcon, but that doesn’t take anything away from them.
.
“We expect a tough game, it’s a friendly, but we are going to try and win game.
.
Onyango also expressed his optimism that the Uganda team will be soon challenging for honors in Africa again after years of failure.
.
The Cranes narrowly missed qualifying for the 2015 Afcon in a group that had Ghana, Togo and Guinea, but Onyango feels the Cranes are on the up.
.
“We have a young team here and we are trying to build a side capable of challenging for honors,”he said.
.
“As you are aware, we narrowly missed qualifying for the Afcon this year and we are already preparing ourselves for the 2017 event.
.
“Coach Micho (Milutin Sredojevic) is really doing well and I believe if we continue like this then we can take Uganda back to the glory days.”Onyango enthused.
.
Uganda will take on Nigeria in an international friendly at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium on Wednesday in a first meeting between the two sides in eight years.
