The organisers of the October 1 nationwide protest against hardship in Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to proceed with the planned demonstration, despite warnings from the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force.
Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and one of the key figures behind the protest, confirmed this in a viral post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday.
Sowore, in his post, declared, “NO GOING BACK! #FearlessInOctober,” indicating that the protest, aimed at addressing the economic hardship and insecurity in the country, will move forward as planned.
In an interview shared on his social media handle, Sowore expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the nation.
He highlighted several issues contributing to the growing discontent among Nigerians, including the rising cost of living, devaluation of the naira, and widespread insecurity.
“Since the last protest on August 1, petrol prices have increased by almost N300 per litre. The naira has further devalued, and the prices of goods in the market have skyrocketed.
Floods are devastating our cities, while bandits have taken over and wiped out entire communities,” Sowore lamented.
He further emphasised that the protest would be peaceful and revealed that it would be held at Eagles Square in Abuja.
In Lagos, the organisers announced that their march would begin at 7:30 am from the Ikeja Under Bridge.
Despite government opposition, the protest organisers remain resolute in their decision to carry on with the demonstration, which is expected to attract large crowds in major cities across Nigeria.
