Residents of Owerri in Imo State have expressed concern over persistent electricity outages weeks after the commissioning of the Orashi 15MVA, 33/11KV Injection Substation by the state government.
The facility was recently inaugurated by Governor Hope Uzodinma alongside the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
Residents say the project was expected to significantly improve electricity supply across the state capital and its surrounding communities.

However, a resident of Ikenegbu Layout, Mr. Thaddeus Ofomah, told journalists that the situation has instead worsened, with several areas experiencing prolonged blackouts.
“The substation was introduced as a pilot scheme to provide uninterrupted 24-hour electricity supply to the city. Electricity was supplied only for a few days after the commissioning. Since then, several parts of Owerri metropolis have been plunged into darkness,” he said.
Another resident, Mr. Ikenna Odoemena of Amaigbo Street, explained that the Orashi Injection Substation is equipped with a 15MVA transformer designed to step down electricity voltage from 33KV to 11KV to enhance distribution.
According to him, the facility was expected to strengthen the electricity network and improve access for households, businesses and public institutions in the metropolis.
Odoemena, however, said the area has not experienced power supply since Tuesday, March 10, contrary to the expectations that followed the commissioning of the project.
Several residents also criticised the supply pattern of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), accusing the company of issuing high electricity bills despite poor power supply.
They lamented that the persistent blackout has negatively affected economic activities and daily living across the city.
Residents of New Owerri said the development has crippled commercial activities, with many business owners reporting declining patronage.
A restaurant owner, Chinaka Ibenaso, said the cost of fueling his generator daily now exceeds his income.
“You could imagine a situation where you buy a litre of fuel at N1,300 multiplied by how many litres you can afford. If you fail to fuel your generator, your items will get spoiled and the loss will still be on you. The situation is very terrible on our side,” he said.
The residents called on relevant authorities, particularly power distribution companies, to urgently address the situation and ensure stable electricity supply within the state capital and its environs.
