The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has called on Governor Adams Oshiomhole to pay salaries of local government workers to avoid high crime rate and industrial crisis in the state.
Addressing newsmen in Benin, the state capital yesterday, The Chairman of Edo PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, said owing local government workers for as long as six months could create security challenges as the workers could resort to illegal ways to make a living.
While calling for financial autonomy for local governments in the country, the opposition party in the state said money accruing to the third tier of government from the Federation Account would pay workers’ salaries, if it was not appropriated by state governments.
Orbih, therefore, urged Governor Oshiomhole to publish the amount collected on behalf of the local government in the state so far.
Meanwhile, the PDP has condemned the recent sack of Edo workers under the Youth Employment Scheme (YES), stressing that the move has increased unemployment level in the state.
Orbih called on the governor to “reorder his priorities and live within available resources”.
The state government while sacking the YES workers last week, blamed poor financial earning of the country occasioned by low price of petroleum products in the international markets.
