The Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), Professor Olugbenga Ige, has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner of the local government council elections.
PDP won all the 18 local government chairmanship seats and 202, out of the 203 councillorship positions available.
According to Ige, “all the results had earlier been declared at various wards and council collation centres by respective returning officers.”
The PDP lost Ward 9, Oba Ile in Akure North Local Government Area to Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN).
News24 reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) boycotted the elections on the grounds that there was no authentic voters register for the elections.
Sahara Reporters also reports that there was low turn-out of voters and election materials came late.
A source who spoke to the news outfit said said “Some loyal civil servants who were trained as Returning Officers by the State Independent Electoral Commission in Akure were given essential materials for the election and even slept over in the commission’s office over night after they were bribed and mobilized financially.
“Surprisingly, they were recalled back to the commission’s office to return all the sensitive materials in their possession and money given to them few hours to the election, thereby delaying the whole process till around some minutes past 10 am in an election that ought to start by 8 am.”
Some PDP chieftains who recently defected to the APC, also alleged that the Governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko has failed the people of the state.
