Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has been given a three-day deadline by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ondo State to return to the Governor’s Office in Akure or resign.
The party’s young members voiced the demand on Monday at the party headquarters in Akure, the state capital of Ondo. They were protesting the governor’s absence.
Security forces including the police, the DSS, and the National Security and Civil Defense Corps had earlier blocked off the PDP secretariat in an effort to stop the demonstration from happening.
Over four weeks have passed since Akeredolu returned from medical leave in Germany, and he has not been seen in the state.
One of the PDP’s young leaders, Tayo Oluyi, has said that the state’s current “leadership vacuum” must end.
What we’re saying, Mr. Governor, is that you need to get back to work,” Oluyi stated. We can no longer be governed by him in his absence, and we can no longer rely on hearsay about his identity.
We’re familiar with our current governor; if he were physically able, we’d have seen him walking about Akure by now.
We’re giving Mr. Governor three days from now to return to Ondo State, but he has to address the people of Ondo State within the next 24 hours.
“We are giving him three days ultimatum to address us, and if he fails, we as the opposition party will occupy the streets of Akure and continue to demand that he either resume or resign.”
