GABORONE (National Sports Commission Report) – Team Nigeria has recorded five gold medals at the ongoing African Youth Games (AYG) in Gaborone, Botswana. The latest gold medals came in courtesy of Esther Etim in the Girls 52kg category Judo Event and Ogini Olasunkanmi in the Boys Singles Quarter-finals Table Tennis Event.
The report from the Publicity Department of the National Sports Commission on Monday May 26, 2014 has revealed that the athletes commenced on very good starts with the promise that they were in the competition to affirm their stand that Nigeria is indeed the giant of Africa.
According to the report, the team defeated the host country 2-0 in the opening football match on Friday and continued in the gallant stride to record another gold medal from Chika Joy Amalaha in the Girls’ 58kg Weightlifting Event. Adding, she set a new African record in the competition when she lifted 87kg in the snatch and 102kg in the clean and jack.
“Emmanuel Ineno Appiah won a gold medal in the weightlifting event in the 56kg boys’ category and the Team Nigeria improved on the medal haul in the team badminton event. Aside from the two gold medals recorded on Sunday May 26, 2014, the result indicated that Nigeria won two bronze medals in the Team Time Trial Girls Cycling Event and girls Singles Quarter-finals Table Tennis Event,” the report said.
“The medal table so far indicates that Nigeria now has a total of seven (7) medals comprising five gold and two bronze medals.”
