The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might be planning to change its name in a bid to distance itself from corrupt party members.
This was disclosed by a PDP member who is currently in office during an extraordinary meeting of the party in Lagos on Friday, January 15, 2016, according to The Tribune.
“As it is now, it is very easy to blackmail the party and the identity with all these alleged corruption probes. I will be pushing for a new name and identity for the party,” the source said.
Other chieftains of the party were said to have advocated a merger with smaller opposition parties to form a mega opposition party.
Several members of the PDP have been named in the ongoing investigation into the $2.1 billion arms deal fraud which was spearheaded by former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.
A large bulk of the funds is believed to have gone into funding the 2015 general elections.
The PDP lost its 16-year ruling party status in 2015 after being defeated by All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and current President, Muhammadu Buhari.
