Usman Okai Austin, the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Youth Frontier, has insisted that the party’s national chairman must come from the North Central region of Nigeria ahead of the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Okai raised concerns about an alleged plan to weaken the PDP before the 2027 general election by making the acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, the substantive chairman following Iyorchia Ayu’s exit.
In a statement, Okai stated, “We find ourselves at a crossroads, where the very essence of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party, is under threat. We are all witnesses to the recent attempts to undermine the democratic process within our beloved party.”

He emphasized the need for the national chairman to be from the North Central region, citing historical transitions within the party’s leadership from different regions of the country.
“Ayu was duly elected in a meticulously organized national convention
His mandate was given to him by the collective will of the party members, and it is not for any individual, from any corner of our great nation, to swoop in and seize what is rightfully his,” Okai stated.
He warned against disregarding the voice of party members and the democratic process, emphasizing that the issue is about the soul of the party and the future of democracy in Nigeria.
