Police authorities in Akwa Ibom State have reportedly arrested a social media activist, Akaninyene Udo, over allegations of raising false security alarms that caused panic among residents.
Udo was said to have been taken into custody after allegedly posting misleading updates online suggesting an imminent security threat in parts of the state.
The posts reportedly triggered tension among residents and prompted emergency responses from security agencies.

Confirming the arrest, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command said the action was taken to prevent the spread of misinformation capable of disturbing public peace.
In a statement issued on Monday in Uyo, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the suspect, a resident of Akpautong in Esit Eket Local Government Area, operated a social media account under the name “AK Philo.”
According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended following investigations into a viral social media post in which he allegedly circulated a security threat.
“The individual was arrested for circulating false information capable of breaching public peace and causing panic among residents,” the police spokesperson stated.
The Command added that investigations were ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and whether other individuals were involved in spreading the information.
The police also urged residents to verify information through official channels before sharing it on social media.
Authorities warned that anyone found guilty of disseminating false security alerts would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
