The Imo State Police Command has thwarted an alleged attempt by suspected organ traffickers, arresting a 38-year-old man connected to the abduction of a 19-year-old girl in Owerri.
Addressing journalists on the development, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed in a press statement that the incident occurred on October 10, 2024, following intelligence reports about a suspected kidnapping and organ trafficking syndicate operating in the Douglass area of the state capital.
According to Okoye, the swift intervention of police operatives on visibility patrol led to the arrest of Justine Emmanuel, a 38-year-old man from Amaimo in Ikeduru LGA of Imo State.
During the operation, a 19-year-old girl, whose identity is being withheld for privacy, was rescued.
“The arrest followed the quick response of vigilant officers who noticed suspicious activities involving the syndicate in a blue and white bus.
The suspects were forcefully taking the young lady to an unknown location, intending to kill her and harvest her organs.
During the chase, the victim courageously jumped from the moving bus and was rescued immediately,” Okoye stated.
He added that the operatives pursued the suspects, forcing them to abandon the vehicle. While one suspect was apprehended, others escaped into a nearby forest.
Okoye confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify the remaining members of the syndicate and uncover the full extent of their criminal operations.
“This successful rescue highlights the Imo State Police Command’s dedication to fighting violent crime and safeguarding the community,” he emphasized.
He further urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring the public that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
