Operatives of the Ebonyi State Police Command have shot one person dead and injured three others in what is being described as an accidental discharge, following a confrontation between police officers and a man who claimed to be a soldier.
Ebonyi State Police Commissioner, Mrs. Adaku Uche-Anya, confirmed the incident on Wednesday in Abakaliki, stating that the shooting occurred during a scuffle between officers and the individual, who was later identified as a motorcyclist.
The police commissioner attributed the tragedy to an accidental discharge.

According to Uche-Anya, the incident unfolded when police officers, conducting routine patrols in response to a rise in motorcycle thefts, stopped the motorcyclist on the old Enugu-Abakaliki road near the Ugwuachara area to request the vehicle’s documentation. The man, who claimed to be a soldier, was unable to provide any identification.
“As the officers attempted to arrest him for failure to provide identification, he resisted and began to grapple with one of the officers’ rifles,” Uche-Anya explained.
“This struggle resulted in an accidental discharge of ammunition, which tragically led to the death of one person and left three others injured.”
Both the police officer involved and the motorcyclist have been taken into custody. The police commissioner expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that a full investigation would be carried out.
She emphasized that anyone found responsible for the incident would face legal consequences.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has vowed to ensure transparency in the investigation and to hold accountable those involved in the tragic event.
