President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his dismay at the mislabelling and blanket stereotyping of Nigeria as a country with the highest prevalence of cybercrime and other forms of corrupt practices among its population.
He emphasized that such misrepresentations undermine the integrity and diligence of the majority of Nigerian citizens.
During a public engagement on youth, religion, and the fight against corruption, as well as the launch of the inter-faith manual and fraud risk assessment project for ministries, departments, and agencies, organized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, addressed the issue.

Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, conveyed Tinubu’s views in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Tinubu regretted that Nigerians have been linked with internet crimes without statistical proof, which he stated is inconsistent with the typical Nigerian citizen’s way of life.
President Tinubu highlighted the positive contributions of Nigerians globally, emphasizing their hard work and honesty in various fields.
He rejected blanket stereotyping and stressed the need for a nuanced understanding of the issue, acknowledging the global threat posed by cybercrimes while calling for a balanced approach that preserves trust and integrity.
President Tinubu assured the EFCC of the government’s support in combating internet crimes and other forms of corruption.
He underscored the importance of the Commission’s efforts in bringing fraudsters to justice and emphasized the need for law enforcement actions to align with principles of justice and accountability.
Tinubu’s remarks reflect the government’s commitment to addressing cybercrimes and corruption while advocating for a fair and evidence-based approach that recognizes the contributions of law-abiding citizens.
