In his national broadcast marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary on October 1, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu acknowledged the struggles Nigerians face due to rising living costs and employment challenges but assured citizens that his administration is working towards sustainable solutions.
He called for patience, stating that the reforms implemented are beginning to yield positive results.
President Tinubu reflected on the progress made since Nigeria gained independence 64 years ago, praising the country’s intellectual capacity and industry.
He highlighted Nigeria’s resilience through crises, including the civil war, and emphasised the importance of unity and managing the country’s diversity.
On security, the president noted significant strides in the fight against terrorism, announcing that over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders had been eliminated, restoring peace to several communities. He promised continued efforts to address insecurity and its impact on agriculture, aiming for increased food production and lower costs.
The president also discussed economic reforms, citing the $30 billion in foreign direct investments attracted in the past year. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fiscal stability, noting improvements in foreign exchange management and the reduction of the debt service ratio from 97% to 68%.
Additionally, Tinubu emphasised the importance of local government financial autonomy, fiscal policy reforms, and measures to lower living costs. He commended several state governors for their efforts in agriculture and outlined initiatives to boost mechanised farming and energy transition.
In a bid to empower Nigeria’s youth, President Tinubu announced the convening of a National Youth Conference, which will address challenges such as education, employment, innovation, and security.
The conference aims to galvanise the energy of Nigeria’s youth, who represent over 60% of the population, in nation-building efforts.
He also mentioned the upcoming launch of the Renewed Hope Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), aimed at creating 2.5 million jobs annually, as well as youth-centric initiatives like the 3 million Technical Talents programme and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
Concluding his address, President Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, urging citizens to remain resilient and hopeful.
He affirmed his administration’s commitment to building a nation of opportunity, unity, and progress.
