Preamble:
You are welcome to today’s briefing session. Once again, we wish to update you with information on a number of developments in the country, particularly as they concern the security challenges currently being experienced in Nigeria.
1. International Support
The Nigerian government welcomes the growing assistance by the international community to support the Nigerian effort to locate and secure the release of the school girls abducted from Chibok. The result of this international cooperation will be the rescue of the school girls and the restoration of peace and normalcy in the sub-region. Therefore, we note and appreciate the coalition of Nigerians, social groups, trade unions and the civil society in the quest for the safe return of the school girls and assure them that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
2. Visit of Chief of Defence Staff to Jos
The President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR, has directed the Chief of Defence Staff to proceed to Jos for further assessment of the situation on ground. We may recall that the Inspector-General of Police had earlier visited the scene of the blasts immediately after the incident. These are all part of the concerted efforts by the government in uncovering the authors of the crime, bringing comfort and succour to our people and in the long run, helping in defeating terrorism and other forms of criminality.
3. Publication of False and Misleading Photographs
The Centre notes, with dismay, the emerging trend of misleading photographs published by the media to illustrate stories. The truth is that these photographs create wrong impressions in the minds of members of the public about the efforts of the government in checking the current security challenges in the country.
We take opportunity to appeal to the media as well as government officials and all other groups to refrain from releasing information of any kind that will harm the on-going security operations against insurgency.
