The Reformed Arewa Youth Coalition (RAYC) has criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of disregarding the principle of federal character in his appointments.
During a press conference in Abuja over the weekend, the group alleged that Wike was managing the FCT as if it were his personal fiefdom, where his decisions were unquestioned.
Comrade Attahiru Musa, the President of RAYC, expressed concern over what he described as lopsided appointments under Wike’s leadership.
“Wike has shown a disturbing pattern in his choice of appointments. He has transformed the FCT into a reflection of Rivers State, blatantly disregarding the principle of federal character.
“Despite being the Centre of Unity, the FCT is being treated as an extension of Rivers State, which is unacceptable.
“There is an urgent need for the FCT Minister to reconsider his actions, as this could lead to ethnic and religious divisions, jeopardizing the peace in the FCT and its surroundings.
“The FCT Minister must remember that he is serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, not as the Minister for Rivers State.
“Therefore, his attempt to fill positions in the FCT Ministry with individuals from Rivers State is not in the best interest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“He cannot govern the Federal Capital Territory in the same manner as he governed Rivers State. He must act with integrity or resign from his position,” the group asserted.
RAYC emphasized that the FCT Minister’s appointments have failed to reflect the principle of Federal Character.
“This trend must be stopped, as the Federal Capital Territory serves as the Centre of Unity. Any action that undermines unity must be rejected.
“From his aides to directors, permanent secretaries, and heads of agencies, it appears to be a Rivers State affair.
“This pattern is unacceptable, and the Reformed Arewa Youth Coalition condemns this ethnic bias in the Federal Capital Territory.
“We call on the FCT Minister to end his ethnic favoritism in the FCT Ministry.
“It is expected that upon assuming office, he would have familiarized himself with the FCT Ministry’s mandate to guide his actions,” the Arewa youths concluded.
