The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has advised students across the higher institutions to register with the political parties of their choice so as to contest for political positions in future elections.

NANS said this in a statement jointly signed with the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS).

This, the students associations said, would enable them participate in the local government elections in Ogun.

The student leaders made the appeal in a statement on Wednesday by the state Chairmen of NANS and NAOSS, Damilola Kehinde and Oluwagbemileke Ogunrombi, respectively.

The unions stated that students have roles to play in the development of the State, hence, the need to ensure the right person is voted for.

“Nigerian students should be ready to take the bull by the horns. Enough of standing on the defensive/criticism side. As students’ leaders, we are qualified enough to participate in elections into the closest tier of government at the grassroots.

“In the process of the coming LGA election in Ogun State, we shall be opening negotiations with political parties to have at least 60 per cent of elective positions across LGAs ceded to students’ leaders to contest.

“Such party will enjoy mass support and endorsement of students.

“We equally implore those that are yet to have their voters’ card to please, as a matter of necessity get registered with INEC in order to vote in future elections,” the unions stated.
