The House of Representatives has passed a bill for the establishment of a Federal University of Technology in Badagry, Lagos State, after its third reading, marking a crucial milestone in efforts to expand access to tertiary education in the region.
The proposed legislation, sponsored by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources and representative of Badagry Federal Constituency, aims to alleviate pressure on existing institutions and provide more educational opportunities for students in Badagry and surrounding areas.
The bill, which now awaits concurrence in the Senate, was presented during plenary by House Majority Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere.
During the debate, Hon. James Faleke emphasized the urgent need for a technical university in Badagry, noting that many Nigerian youths, particularly from the South-West, are compelled to seek education abroad due to limited admission slots in local institutions.
“This university is a strategic response to the educational gaps that force many of our brightest minds to look beyond our borders. Lagos has long deserved an additional federal institution with a strong focus on science and technology,” Faleke said.
Hon. Whingan, whose advocacy was instrumental in pushing the bill forward, expressed appreciation to his colleagues for their support, describing the development as a major victory for the people of Badagry and Lagos State at large.
“With this development, we are closer than ever to realizing a long-standing aspiration for our people.
This is about ensuring that the next generation of Nigerians can study, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society from right here at home,” he stated.
The bill now proceeds to the Senate for concurrence, after which it will be transmitted to the President for assent.
