The National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) has been accused of mismanaging taxpayer dollars, prompting the House Committee on Healthcare Services to launch an investigation.
On Tuesday, the resolution was passed after Esosa Iyawe’s proposal was approved.
Iyawe said in his motion that poor administration was to blame for the deterioration of the quality of the NHIA, formerly known as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
His statement was something like, “despite the huge budgetary allocations, records have shown that only a negligible 3% of persons in the formal sector have access to health insurance.”
According to Mr. Iyawe, NHIA employees are conspiring with HMOs to steal money from the program.
He claimed that “the scheme’s implementation had been mired with corruption, lack of transparency and accountability, irregularities among HMOs, and ill-treatment of enrollees by healthcare providers.”
Without any discussion or argument, the House unanimously approved the proposal.
