Residents of High Level in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, are grappling with significant losses following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall on Friday.
InfoStride News reports that the construction of an underpass in High Level contributed to the extensive flooding in the area.
The project, undertaken by Baahaus Global Investment Nig. Ltd., has been linked to the blocked water channels and drainages, exacerbating the flood’s impact on local businesses and livelihoods.

Victims of the flooding have alleged negligence on the part of the construction company, which they claim blocked all water channels, forcing water into homes and business premises.
Several buildings around the construction site were affected, including the property of Elder Thomas Anyaregh at No. 7 High Level Rd, Makurdi. The entire building, housing multiple business shops, was submerged in water.
Affected tenants include Tobias Ezenkwo, Vincent Nwakwo, Romanius Chukwuma Nkwo, Japheth Ochinawata, and Sylina Agwu (Lady J Computers), all of whom suffered losses amounting to millions of naira due to the blocked drainage systems.
Mr. Anyaregh, the landlord, expressed his frustration to newsmen, clarifying that while he supports the state’s construction of the High Level Underpass, he strongly opposes the incompetence of Baahaus Global Investment Nig. Ltd.
He criticized the company’s refusal to create adequate water channels despite repeated appeals, which he claims have led to the destruction of his and his tenants’ properties.
Deeply incensed, Elder Anyaregh vowed to seek compensation for the damages caused by the construction firm’s negligence.
“This inaction has completely ruined my properties and those of my tenants,” he lamented. “I will not stand by while such carelessness goes unaddressed.”
The residents of High Level continue to count their losses as they call for immediate action to prevent further damage and ensure proper water management in the area.
