Governor Siminialaye Fubara has pledged to prioritize the safety of sea travellers in the state following a tragic boat mishap that claimed the lives of 20 people.
The governor expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured the public of his administration’s commitment to improving safety measures for sea transportation.
In a statement released by his media adviser, Mr. Boniface Onyedi, Governor Fubara affirmed that his administration would intensify efforts to make sea routes safer for residents.
The statement emphasized the government’s determination to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, Erastus Awortu, Chairman of Andoni Local Government Council, cautioned boat drivers against undertaking night journeys to mitigate the risk of accidents.
He announced the establishment of a monitoring team to provide medical assistance to survivors and a team of divers tasked with recovering the bodies of the deceased.
“We immediately dispatched our team to join the first responders on a rescue mission at the scene to help salvage the situation.
We are closely monitoring the situation to offer further support, especially to give the survivors the necessary medical attention.
Our men are also out to help recover the remains of dead bodies from the river,” Chairman Awortu stated.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and assured them of the council’s support during this difficult time.
The chairman also offered prayers for the repose of the departed souls.
