Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has said his administration will continue sponsorship of Christian and Muslim Pilgrims to their respective Holy lands.
He made the pledge during the inauguration of the State Christian and Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Sunday.
Wike explained that the dwindling state resources was not an excuse to stop sponsoring Nigerians, adding that pilgrimage was necessary for spiritual growth of the people.
“Rivers government will continue to sponsor pilgrims in view of the importance Nigerians place on their religious faith.
“However, the number of people to be sponsored on pilgrimages would be reduced in line with dwindling state resources.
“My administration will continue to promote religious harmony and support Muslims because of our belief in religious diversity”, he said.
The governor, however, urged the boards to be prudent with resources and work hard to avoid financial scandal.
