On November 28, 2023, during the 2nd annual Nigeria Automotive Industry Award held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, Samuel Oriowo, Chairman of the Automobiles and Road Safety Initiative, appealed to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for increased support in their mission to enhance safety on Nigerian roads.
Having dedicated a decade to promoting safety, Oriowo emphasized the necessity for financial assistance to sustain the organization’s vital work. He specifically urged the FRSC, under the leadership of Corps Marshal Dauda Biu, to champion the cause for an annual funding allocation from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, which oversees the FRSC.
Expressing concerns about the risks faced during travels across the country, Oriowo highlighted the lack of recognition or compensation, whether monetary or in the form of vehicles, for the organization. He pointed out the inefficiency of having numerous vehicles lying idle at the FRSC headquarters, deeming it unacceptable.

Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Lagos State Commissioner of Transport, acknowledged the organizers for their unwavering efforts in promoting safety among drivers. Represented by Abel Adebayor, the Director for Public Transportation and Commuter Safety, the commissioner praised Oriowo for his dedication to contributing to government objectives rather than seeking assistance.
In seeking government support, Oriowo emphasized the importance of proactive measures to enhance road safety. He called for recognition of the organization’s efforts and appealed for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges faced in ensuring safety on Nigerian roads.
The plea for financial backing comes against the backdrop of increasing road safety concerns, exemplified by incidents such as the recent Kogi fuel tanker explosion. The tragic event underscores the urgency of collaborative efforts to mitigate risks and enhance safety measures across the country.
As InfoStride News advocates for increased government support, it highlights the need for a systematic approach to address the issues raised by Oriowo. The call for annual funding allocation aligns with the organization’s commitment to advancing road safety initiatives and contributing to the overall well-being of the Nigerian populace.
In conclusion, the appeal by the Automobiles and Road Safety Initiative serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility in ensuring road safety. As stakeholders and government entities work together, the hope is to create a safer environment for all road users in Nigeria.
