Cristiano Ronaldo scored two of Real Madrid’s 10 goals in the home romp over Rayo Vallecano, and in doing so, further increased his lead over Lionel Messi in the 2015-16 scoring battle between the two superstars in La Liga.
Ronaldo converted a first half penalty that gave Real a lead they would not relinquish. The result helped Madrid climb to within two points of leaders Barcelona in the Spanish standings.
Meanwhile, Messi was a world away in Japan, scoring Barcelona’s opening goal in their 3-0 Club World Cup final victory over River Plate.
Ronaldo and Real Madrid host Real Sociedad on Dec. 30. Barcelona and Messi welcome in Betis later that day.
