Sunday saw the successful test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile from Russia’s newest nuclear submarine, and the military claimed victory.
Tensions between Russia and the West over the conflict in Ukraine have increased as a result of the study.
Moscow argued that this was necessary in order to achieve parity with the United States, and so President Vladimir Putin last week signed a measure that revoked Russia’s acceptance of a global nuclear test prohibition.
According to a statement released by the Russian Ministry of Defense, the strategic missile cruiser Imperator Alexander III launched a Bulava missile from a submerged position in the northern White Sea, striking a target in Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka region.
When exactly the test launch took place was not made clear in the announcement.
One of the new Borei-class nuclear submarines, the Imperator Alexander III carries 16 Bulava missiles and will be a vital part of the country’s nuclear arsenal for the foreseeable future.
The Defense Ministry has stated that a ballistic missile launch will serve as the ship’s final test before a decision is made about its incorporation into the fleet.
According to the Defense Ministry, Russia has three operational Borei-class submarines, another is nearing the end of testing, and a further three are now under development.
