The Rivers State House of Assembly has taken a decisive step by voting to override Governor Sim Fubara’s decision to withhold his assent on four key laws passed by the lawmakers.
The laws in question are the Rivers State Funds Management and Financial Autonomy Law 2023, the Rivers State Local Government Amendment Law 2023, the Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State-Owned Property Prohibition Repeal Law 2024, and the Traditional Rulers Amendment Law 2024.
The decision to override the governor’s veto came amid heightened political tensions in the state, particularly between Governor Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Reports indicate that some lawmakers aligned with Wike had made attempts to impeach Governor Fubara, reflecting the deep-seated rift between the two political figures over control of political structures and resources in Rivers State.
During this period of political upheaval, several state lawmakers defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a show of support for Wike.
However, the situation took a turn when President Bola Tinubu intervened in the matter, facilitating a peace deal between Wike and Fubara in Abuja.
The recent decision by the Rivers State House of Assembly to override Governor Fubara’s veto signals a significant development in the ongoing power struggle within the state’s political landscape.
It remains to be seen how this move will impact the dynamics between the governor, the lawmakers, and other key stakeholders in Rivers State politics.
