Baltasar Engonga, the recently dismissed Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been remanded in custody following a high-profile scandal and corruption allegations.
Engonga is being held in Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.
Engonga’s dismissal and subsequent arrest stem from what is described as one of the country’s most significant sex scandals, involving the discovery of about 400 sex tapes.
These tapes, found during a fraud investigation at his home and office, reportedly feature the ex-ANIF chief with numerous prominent women, prompting national outcry.
In response, President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo issued Decree No. 118/2024 on November 4, citing “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties” as grounds for Engonga’s removal.
The dismissal was formally enacted on November 6, 2024.
French blog Afrikmatin confirmed that Engonga was subsequently handcuffed and transferred to Malabo Central Prison.
He now faces multiple charges, including corruption and embezzlement.
