Recalled Warriors striker Edward Sadomba says he returns to the Zimbabwe national team for Sunday’s 2015 Orange Africa Cup of Nations first round, second leg qualifier against Tanzania, probably at the wrong time as they are under pressure to win.
Sadomba was due in Harare on Monday, but eventually arrived late Thursday night from his Libyan base to join the Warriors camp. Tanzania had also arrived earlier in the day. Zimbabwe lost the first leg 1-0 and need to win by two clear goals to progress to the second round.
Sadomba, with five goals in the CAF Orange Champions League for Al Ahli Benghazi, has poor statistics for the Warriors having scored just once in 14 matches, but is hopeful that he can find a favourable return to the National Sports Stadium.
“There is nothing wrong in people saying I score more for my clubs than for Zimbabwe. It’s all about the different type of play style. Sometimes I play as a second striker, sometimes as a winger and usually get into good positions in the box.
“In sudan I did play as an outright number nine, but it all depends on the coach and the type of formation he uses,” Sadomba told CAFonline.com ahead of the weekend game.
He added: “I am only joining the team now and it’s up to the coaches to select me,” the former Al Hilal striker said. He added that should he be selected he is keen to transfer his club goal scoring success to national team.
The Warriors have been hit by a number of withdrawals due to injuries with Mathew Rusike of Kaizer Chiefs, Simba Sithole of Ajax Cape Town, Carlington Nyadombo of AmaZulu and Peter Moyo of Highlanders limping. Moyo is the latest casualty after being injured in a league match last Sunday.
Kuda Mahachi was in Namibia with his Mamelodi Sundowns team for a one day tournament and picked up a knock and had to return to South Africa for treatment.
Sadomba, who has also played for Tembisa Classic, Bidvest Wits and Maritzburg in South Africa and Liga Muculmana in Mozambique before leaving for Al Hilal in Sudan, said it was up to the players to deliver.
“We can’t leave everything to the coach. We have to deliver, we are playing at home and we can’t afford to be knocked out in the first round. If selected I will do my best to make sure we win,” he said.
Coach Gorowa also has Cuthbert Malajila as part of his strike-force along with Sadomba and Tendai Ndoro. One other striker, who will have a big shout for a starting berth is How Mine’s Kuda Musharu. Musharu has eight goals in the local league from nine matches and scored six when his side How Mine was still playing in the Orange CAF Confederation Cup this season.
The aggregate winner of the Warriors vs Taifa Stars will face either Mozambique who beat South sudan 5-0 on aggregate.
