Opaluwa Eleojo Simeon, a security expert specializing in Criminology and Security Studies, has called on the Federal Government to reinstate the practice of executing criminals by firing squad as a measure to address the increasing incidents of kidnapping across the country.
In an interview with media personnel, Simeon emphasized the need for a more efficient Criminal Justice Administration system, citing its sluggishness as a factor that has emboldened criminal elements in Nigeria.
“The utilitarian theory of crime should be activated because it has a uniquely potent deterrent effect on criminals and potentially violent offenders for whom the threat of imprisonment is not a sufficient restraint,” Simeon stated.

He proposed the reintroduction of execution by firing squad into the criminal justice system and urged the establishment of a special court dedicated to handling violent crimes like kidnapping, with a mandate to dispose of cases within 30 days.
Expressing concern over the rising incidence of kidnapping in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs, Simeon highlighted the alarming security situation in the nation’s capital.
“Kidnapping is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria, but the recent surge in the FCT is particularly worrying. Residents no longer feel safe, and the frequency of kidnappings has instilled fear, leading to a palpable sense of insecurity,” Simeon remarked.
He cited recent incidents, including the abduction of two individuals from an estate belonging to the Nigerian Army in Kurudu, where the perpetrators demanded a ransom of N30 million.
Similar incidents have been reported in areas like Bwari, Kuje, and Tunga Maje, indicating the widespread nature of the problem.
Simeon also raised concerns about reports suggesting the presence of Boko Haram members disguised as kidnappers around the FCT, further complicating the security landscape.
In conclusion, Simeon stressed the importance of a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including security agencies and citizens, to combat the growing threat posed by kidnappers and other criminal elements in the country.
