The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended the performance of senators in the previous year, stating that their dedication and service have raised the expectations of Nigerians.
Addressing the lawmakers as they resumed from the Christmas and New Year recess, Akpabio acknowledged the challenges faced during the previous year’s elections and praised their constituents for entrusting them with the responsibility to represent their interests.
Akpabio emphasized the weight of the responsibility placed on the senators by their constituents, urging them to fulfill their duties diligently and work towards the betterment of society.

He highlighted the Senate’s role as a platform for effecting change and advocating for the people’s interests.
The Senate President called for unity and collaboration among the senators, emphasizing the need to transcend partisan divides for the nation’s greater good.
He underscored the importance of approaching pressing issues such as economic recovery, healthcare reform, national security, and social justice with a spirit of collaboration and commitment to finding common ground.
Akpabio encouraged the lawmakers to engage in passionate and respectful debates while crafting legislation that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
He emphasized the need for the Senate to maintain its independence while collaborating with the executive arm under President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, in accordance with the constitution.
In light of the upcoming elections on Saturday, the Senate President announced a one-week recess to allow members of the National Assembly to participate in the off-season campaigns.
The Senate is scheduled to resume its session on the sixth day of February 2023.
