Senator Adams Oshiomhole of Edo North has extended an olive branch to Governor Godwin Obaseki, referring to him as a friend despite their political disparities.
Oshiomhole conveyed this sentiment during his goodwill message at the ongoing 2023 Alaghodaro Summit in Benin City.
Asserting the importance of recognizing diverse opinions without sparking hostilities, Oshiomhole emphasized, “Regardless of what people say, we should not give the impression that different opinions translate to war.”
He underscored his respect for the Office of the Governor and Governor Obaseki, stating, “having [had] the privilege of being governor, I have high regard for the Office of the Governor and for the governor himself.”
While acknowledging the presence of all civilian governors elected in the state at the summit, Oshiomhole highlighted the significance of shared commitment to the citizens of Edo State, surpassing political affiliations.
He remarked, “We can politic differently but never have doubt about the shared commitment to the citizens of the state that should be the greatest in Nigeria.”
Emphasizing the role of democratic ideology in shaping leaders’ discourse, Oshiomhole stated, “What defines democracy is ideology; even if we share the same destination, the route to get there may differ; it should not be a matter of war.”
He concluded by affirming the friendship with Governor Obaseki, emphasizing that being friends allows for healthy debates and disagreements while fostering unity among their followers.
