Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has expressed sadness over the passing of Ogbonnaya Onu, highlighting the late politician’s displacement from the presidency in 1999.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th assembly, paid tribute to Onu, noting that he could have been Nigeria’s President in 1999 after winning the All Peoples Party (APP) primaries in Kaduna, attended by prominent figures like the late Ikemba of Nnewi, Chief Ojukwu.
According to Sani, Onu was deliberately displaced after a midnight merger with the then Alliance for Democracy (AD), as the military favored Olusegun Obasanjo and Olu Falae for the presidency.

Describing Onu as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished, decent, and disciplined political figures, Sani highlighted his contributions to Nigeria’s politics over four decades, serving as a Senator in the second republic, a Governor in the third republic, and holding various positions in the fourth republic.
Sani praised Onu’s integrity, noting his unblemished record and his nationalist credentials.
He described Onu as a true patriot who served his country with decorum and impactful anonymity, living above the politics of rancor and controversy.
Reflecting on the political landscape in 1999, Sani noted that the outgoing military regime wanted power to shift to the South West, and Onu, being a simple man, did not actively seek power.
He also mentioned that Onu’s residence in Asokoro remained rented by his party, the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), throughout his tenure as minister.
Sani concluded by praying for the repose of Onu’s soul.
