Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has called on the northern region to remain steadfast in its support for President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Sani advised the North not to abandon the administration, particularly in favor of individuals and groups who did not vote for it.
He also urged northerners to back positive reforms initiated by the Tinubu administration, despite growing criticism of some policies.
The ex-lawmaker’s remarks, captured in a video obtained by Newsmen, were in response to northern opposition to Tinubu’s Tax Reforms Bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly.
The tax reforms have faced widespread criticism, with some alleging that the bills unfairly target the northern region, while others argue that they would place an undue burden on Nigerians.
Highlighting the North’s vast natural and human resources, Sani stressed that the region must focus on self-reliance rather than depending on external assistance.
“There’s no part of the country as blessed as the northern region,” Sani said. “We cover about 65% of Nigeria’s total landmass.
Out of the nation’s 235 rivers, almost 70% are in the North. We have the resources—cotton, sugarcane, and countless natural deposits—to sustain ourselves. Yet, we continue to depend on salvation from others.”
He further urged northerners to remain supportive of a government they helped bring to power.
“If I’m not mistaken, this is a government the North delivered.
Why should you antagonize a baby you delivered? You shouldn’t leave this government to others who didn’t vote for it. Your demands should focus on substantial issues at the table,” Sani stated.
He also noted that the North has been given significant representation in Tinubu’s administration, listing key appointments such as the Minister of Education, Minister of Agriculture, Chief of Defence Staff, National Security Adviser, and Minister of Commerce and Information as positions held by northerners.
Sani concluded by calling for unity and constructive engagement with the administration to ensure the region’s interests are well-represented.
