The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has declared the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of Saturday’s local government elections sweeping all the 44 local government chairmanship seats and 484 councillorship seats in the state.
A two-paragraph press release signed by the chairman, KANSIEC, Dr Sani Lawal Malumfashi, and made available to journalists, stated that the commission had discharged its constitutional responsibilities of organising, supervising and conducting local government polls on May 17, 2014.
The statement affirmed that the election was largely successful and peaceful.
However, the state leader of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and former governor of the state, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau has on behalf of the party rejected and condemned the elections in the 44 local government areas of the state due to alleged violation of electoral process and guidelines.
Information Nigeria learnt that Shekarau was defeated in his Giginyu polling unit in Nassarawa local government area of the state by his former party, APC.
But the erstwhile governor at a press briefing said PDP observed that there was no evidence of any effort by KANSIEC to provide adequate materials and officials to conduct such elections, which resulted in the inability of the party’s supporters to cast their votes.
Shekarau added that the party has ample evidence that where ballot boxes were supposedly provided, they were short of the required number for the polling units, which made it impossible to accommodate voters, alleging also that no voter register was provided to guide the conduct of the election across the state.
Meanwhile, the announcement of the results of the elections was simultaneously done by the five local radio stations in the state and read out and declared by the various returning officers of various local government areas.
