A boat accident on the Jole River in Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State has resulted in the death of six passengers, while nine others were rescued alive.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, April 5, 2025, was confirmed by the Taraba State Police Command, according to a post by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region.
Makama, citing police sources, stated that the boat was conveying 15 individuals when it capsized midstream.

Rescue operations involving local divers and community volunteers led to the successful recovery of nine survivors. The bodies of six victims were later retrieved from the river.
The deceased were identified as Dadi Mallam Dotti (30), Mubarak Abdu (21), Bappa Mallam Dotti (20), Adamu Yayagardi (30), and one Madugu (22), all of the Terawa ethnic group from Badabdi in Funakaye Local Government Area of Gombe State. The sixth victim, Umar Gambo (34), hailed from Zaura Ward in Damban Local Government Area of Bauchi State and belonged to the Karakare ethnic group.
The boat driver reportedly fled the scene and is currently at large. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
