SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(Marketwired – Jul 8, 2014) – In recognition of National Cell Phone Courtesy Month (July), Skout, the leading global app that helps you meet new people and expand your social circle, has surveyed more than 5,000 people to uncover the do’s and don’ts of cell phone behavior in our mobile society.
“Mobile phones have become an incredible tool for us to connect with others, our community and the world around us, but as our survey clearly shows people need to be mindful of how their cell phone behavior affects those around them,” said Christian Wiklund, co-founder and CEO of Skout.
Skout’s survey findings reveal the following Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to cell phone behavior:
DO turn off your phone during sex!
- 25% of men and 17% of women admit that they have actually checked for messages, or sent messages, during sex!
- Almost half of all people (49%) have been interrupted by their mobile phone during sex.
DO know that your cell phone manners reflect on you as an overall person.
- 67% of people say that your cell phone manners reflect your overall manners as a person.
- 21% of people have actually ended a relationship with someone because they had bad cell phone manners.
- 78% of people say they notice when someone has good cell phone manners (hooray!).
DO ask your friends if it is okay to tag them in pictures before you post.
- 64% of people say that it is not okay to get tagged in photos on social media sites without their permission.
DON’T put your cell phone on the table when you eat at a restaurant.
- 52% of people say you should not put your mobile phone on the table during a meal.
- 70% of people confess that they are guilty of breaking that rule, though.
DON’T break off a relationship using your mobile phone.
- 50% of people say someone else has broken off a relationship with them using their mobile phone.

DON’T try to have multiple conversations at once.
- Skout’s survey reveals that the worst breech of cell phone etiquette is “using your mobile phone while simultaneously talking to someone in person.” (41%)
